Let’s cheer together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 12th edition of the biggest Czech stage race, Czech Tour, started today in Uni\u010dov with a team time trial over 18.6 kilometres. In this UCI first-category event, the fastest were, just as last year, the riders of the Australian team Mitchelton Scott. And they won convincingly \u2013 they gave the second-placed Dutch Team Sunweb 25 seconds, while the third-placed Norwegian Uno-X Pro Cycling Team finished in the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Czech riders also showed themselves in an excellent light. Our best team, Elkov Kasper, finished fourth \u2013 just three seconds off their second place from last year \u2013 while the Czech national team led by coach Tom\u00e1\u0161 Kone\u010dn\u00fd was twelfth, but their deficit is small too, just 1:04.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The draw decided that Elkov Kasper would go first on the course, and the line-up of Michal Schlegel, Michael Kukrle, Adam \u0164oupal\u00edk, Dominik Neuman, Jan B\u00e1rta, Karel Hn\u00edk and Jakub Otruba set the bar quite high. When the Hradec Kr\u00e1lov\u00e9 team won on the same course in 2017, they rode a time fifteen seconds slower than today and held the lead position for a long time. They were beaten by just a few tenths by the Uno-X Pro Cycling Team riders and, at the very end, by Team Sunweb. The Mitchelton Scott riders went last on the course and literally flew. Their timer was the only one to stop under the twenty-minute mark, and they confirmed their high class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The guys set off very fast, and I was wondering whether they had gone too hard. But they rode exactly what we had agreed. They handled the tough section to Medlov very well, and five kilometres before the finish it was clear it was going to be good. The team rode absolutely evenly; the only one who didn’t appear much at the front was Karel Hn\u00edk, but it is known that he is not a time trialler \u2013 the other six riders did equal work, and I am very satisfied with the result,” said team coach Otakar Fiala.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And team captain Jan B\u00e1rta added: “I think it was pretty good. Yesterday we rode the course and everyone knew what to expect. The first half was with the wind, the second against it, but thanks to the balanced team we managed without any problems.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

National team coach Tom\u00e1\u0161 Kone\u010dn\u00fd was also smiling after his riders crossed the finish line. “I am satisfied, very satisfied. Except for Dan Turek, all the other guys are from the U23 category and we rode together like this for the first time. We had just one day to prepare, and the final time is very good for us. That Turek and Petr Kelemen would do most of the work, I expected, but Vojt\u011bch \u0158epa, Vojt\u011bch Sedl\u00e1\u010dek and Tom\u00e1\u0161 B\u00e1rta also helped the team a great deal,” assessed Tom\u00e1\u0161 Kone\u010dn\u00fd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Australian Luke Dubridge will start the second stage in the yellow jersey of the main partners, the Olomouc and Moravian-Silesian Regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mitchelton Scott was fastest on 18,6 km long TTT course and leads the race<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In mildly ondulating terrain Mitchelton Scott team managed to finish fastest with average speed 56,32 km\/h and finished 25 second before second Team Sunweb, and third Uno-X Pro Cycling Team in same time. Czech Conti team Elkov Kasper finished fourth to make local fans happy. Big mistake cost NTT good time and probably also some blood and scratches, as they crashed on fast course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The winner of the second stage of Czech Tour, a UCI first-category event, was Belgian Jordi Meeus (SEG Racing Academy) after 193.7 kilometres, who beat reigning Belgian champion Tim Merlier (Alpecin \u2013 Fenix), with German Max Kanter (Team Sunweb) finishing third. However, the stage from Prost\u011bjov to Uni\u010dov brought no dramatic changes. Australian Luke Durbridge held the yellow jersey without the slightest difficulty, and the rest of the standings remained practically unchanged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The best Czech rider was Dominik Neuman (Elkov Kasper) in ninth place; four places behind him came the best of the cyclists in Czech national team jerseys, Tom\u00e1\u0161 B\u00e1rta. The red jersey for the best Czech rider, sponsored by Prim and Media Walk, was taken over by Neuman from his teammate Michal Schlegel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The stage went as expected \u2013 nothing significant happened. There was no wind, so no drama unfolded either. Before the thirty-kilometre mark, a trio of Keon Bouwman (Neth.\/Team Jumbo), Matteo Fabbro (Italy\/Bora hansgrohe) and Yannik Achterberg (Ger.\/Majola Pushbikers) broke away. At all the mountain bonus points the order was the same \u2013 Bouwman, Fabbro, Achterberg \u2013 and the peloton kept everything safely under control. Bouwman thus claimed the jersey of the best climber from Emco. It was the Mitchelton Scott riders who settled at the front and did not allow the trio to build a lead of more than four minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before the finish town of Uni\u010dov they accelerated further, and after the first pass before the three final circuits they caught the last brave breakaway rider Bouwman, while the other two had already rejoined the peloton earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It was a stage like every year, and since there was no wind, practically nothing happened. Three riders went away and Mitchelton Scott kept watch on the gap. The guys had the task of going in some larger breakaway, but joining a group of three would have been a pointless waste of energy. They fulfilled the tactical plan and in the finish they drove for Neuman, who got into the top ten \u2013 he proved that he is a good sprinter. Tomorrow’s stage will definitely be more demanding,” assessed today’s nearly two hundred kilometres Elkov Kasper coach Otakar Fiala.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Czech national team coach Tom\u00e1\u0161 Kone\u010dn\u00fd spoke in a similar vein. “It was a stage as expected. There was no wind, so it was completely fine. If a larger group had gone away, we would have wanted someone in it. About three kilometres before the finish there was a crash that slowed two of our guys down, but it was already in the neutralised zone, so no problem. Tom\u00e1\u0161 B\u00e1rta practically lives on the course, so the guys wanted to help him at the end, and I think they managed it \u2013 he finished thirteenth,” said Kone\u010dn\u00fd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Escape of Keon Bouwman (Team Jumbo), Matteo Fabbro (Bora hansgrohe) and Yannik Achterberg (Majola Pushbikers) was strong, but time gaps were controled by Mitchelton Scott and stage finished in bunch sprint on final flat rounds in Uni\u010dov city, on same place as yesterday’s TTT. Jordi Meeus showed his dominance beating belgium national champ Tim Merlier (Alpecin \u2013 Fenix) and Max Kanter (Team Sunweb). Yellow Jersey holds still Luke Durbridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The winner of the 12th edition of the stage race Czech Tour, a UCI first-category event, was Australian Damien Howson<\/strong> of the Mitchelton Scott team; second was his New Zealand teammate Jack Bauer<\/strong>, and third is classified Norwegian rider Markus Hoelgaard<\/strong> (UNO-X Pro Cycling Team). The Czechs also succeeded. Today, Adam \u0164oupal\u00edk<\/strong> (Elkov Kasper) finished third in the stage, which lifted him to fourth place overall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Hradec Kr\u00e1lov\u00e9 team also won the team competition, beating all six WorldTour teams. Other Czech cyclists also made it into the elite top ten of the individual standings. Jakub Otruba (Elkov Kasper) finished an excellent sixth, additionally winning the under-23 young riders’ competition, while ninth place went to the winner of this race in 2015, Petr Vako\u010d (Alpecin \u2013 Fenix).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today’s stage was truly a queen stage, with nine mountain bonus points in total awaiting the riders. As early as the tenth kilometre a group of five riders broke away; they did not feature among the leaders in the overall standings and had nearly five minutes in hand at Velk\u00e9 Losiny. By then, however, they had entered the climb to Dlouh\u00e9 str\u00e1n\u011b, and before the summit a group of 28 riders caught them \u2013 but not among them was yellow jersey wearer Australian Kaden Groves (Mitchelton Scott), so it was clear that the race leader would change again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the subsequent climb to \u010cernohorsk\u00e9 sedlo, a trio escaped: Pascal Eenkhoorn (Neth.\/Team Jumbo Visma), Felix Gall (Ger.\/Team Sunweb) and Jimmy Janssen (Neth.\/Alpecin \u2013 Fenix). They stayed at the front through the mountain bonuses at Vidly, Lyra and Hv\u011bzda, but as soon as they entered the first of the four circuits in the finish town of \u0160ternberk they were caught by the main field \u2013 so, as tradition dictates, the race was decided on the cobbled climb of the Ecce Homo course. In the final hill Howson and Hoelgaard gained a small gap and finished in that order; the chasing group was led to the line by Adam \u0164oupal\u00edk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“When those two got away in the last lap, I didn’t have the strength to hold their wheel. On the descent I tried to get as far forward as possible, in the last corner I jumped past Eenkhoorn and it turned into a great third place. From the extremely demanding climb at Dlouh\u00e9 str\u00e1n\u011b onwards the pace was very high and I felt good today. The guys brought down the breakaway riders and in the end both I and the whole team are satisfied. It was an important race for the team, and I consider our result very good in such strong competition,” said Adam \u0164oupal\u00edk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Final stage of Czech Tour from Olomouc to \u0160ternberk on tough hills of Jesen\u00edky mountains was final big show. Nice but very hot weather and great mountains. While there was strong escape with 2018 winner Riccardo Zoidl, peloton lead by Elkov Kasper and Mitchelton Scott mostly controlled today’s stage and decision was made on final rounds in the city of \u0160umperk. In last round, Damien Howson (Mitchelton Scott) managed to make small gap with Markus Hoelgaard (Uno-X Pro Cycling Team) and they also finished in this order on finish line. Howson with this win also got final first place in general classification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
